-I am going to pre-emptively declare Wall-E is Pixar's best film. Good to see them trying something ambitious after trying awful (Cars) and just pretty good (Ratitoulle).
-Hellboy 2, pretty good trailer. I enjoyed the first one and thought it deserved a sequel (same with Constantine). The villian looks silly. Having an albino, long-haired villian never works (The Time Machine, Underworld, Van Helsing...). Good to see del Toro bring Pan's Labrynth creepiness into the film (eyes where there shouldn't be, small creatures like the fairies). Could be bad. I don't recall Mimic being a triumph and the first wasn't perfect either.

Cloverfield: Good or Bad?

The full trailer of Cloverfield was released. Still hard to say if this is the awesomest movie ever or not. The idea is Blair Witch if it had a huge budget. Children of Men already mastered the first-person, live action cam horror. Still, looking forward to this more than the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. Why Jason Lee?

Democrats Micro-managing the War?

I still cannot wrap my head around Republican complaints that Democrats are trying to micro-manage the war. Announcing an end to a war is about the most macro-managing action one can take. The two most macro actions in a war are starting and ending it. Micro-managing would be the Democrats deciding what awful food that we contract Sodexho to feed our soldiers (lets hope it's not as bad as the food they provide our nation's universities, I am sure they still charge $6 for an awful cheese sandwhich).

The Office steals Arrested Development joke

So in the season premiere, Michael implies that Meredith is dead but then shortly says that she is OK. Stanley then responds, What is wrong with you? Sound familiar? Maybe when Dr. Wordsmith implied that George Sr., Tobias and Michael are dead or going to die and the Bluths respond in a similar fashion. I am pretty sure this show has stolen some other jokes.

Things I Don't Like About the Movie-Going Experience

-when people check their cellphones. Unless you are a medical doctor on call there is no reason you cannot wait 90 minutes to check your cell. You may even walk out of the theater if it is very important. Do you not realize that when you open that cell-phone in a darkened theater it becomes a beacon of light that everyone behind you is drawn to and thus distracted?
-talking. Some movies demand talking, Snakes on a Plane come to mind. But if you missed a joke or plot point it is unnecessary to ask for an explanation because now you have missed another joke or plot point.
-advertisements before movies. Going to the movies has very few moments to socialize (see above point)so the only times to politely talk is before and after the movie. This is no longer possible because cinemas blast advertisements. It was fine when there was no audio and acceptable when the audio was limited to background noise but it is just wrong to blast those ads in full THX, ear shattering decibel ranges.
-no intermission. I like the bathroom break a DVD provides.
-no rewinding. I am a little OCD with my movies and sometimes like to rewatch a previous scene so I dont miss something.
-too crowded. I rather not sit next to a stranger then I have to sit as compact as possible not to intrude on my neighbor's space.
-theater hoppers. It is OK if you decide to catch a double feature, that is the theater's problem. But when you enter the movie half-way, catch a scene, then leave, you have distracted me.

The New Simpsons

The season premiere of The Simpsons had a new addition (no, not Spider-Pig, having not seen the movie I did not get the whole intro). They are starting to use CGI for certain scenes, like animating the private jet. The show had only used CGI once before (I believe) and that was for a Halloween episode so that really doesn't count. Other cartoon shows, Family Guy and Futurama, heavily used the cgi-cell shading technique to more or less good use (more good for Futurama and more bad for Family Guy). The Simpsons made good, subtle use of it in tonight's episode, however, having watched this show for as long as I can remember causes any change to makes me nervous.

Storm does not fit in with the X-Men Universe

Seriously, Storm controls the weather? I accept that Wolverine can heal fast and Magneto can control magnetic fields. Those are all causes in themselves: healing and magnetism. (OK the cause of healing is cell division and what not, so lets assume Wolverine controls cell division, whose effects are either healing or a tumor) Weather is an effect of different causes: heat from the sun, the earth revolving, convection in the oceans, etc. So it would make more sense that storm can control heat flow or some other effect but no she only can create weather effects. This is absurd, even for a comic book superhero.

Meta Television

So, in the season opener of Monk called "Monk and His Biggest Fan" Sarah Silverman plays an obsessive follower of Monk. The meta-moment is when she keeps referring to different cases Monk solved as titles of former episodes like "Monk and the Astronaut" and Monk keeps asking, "Why are you giving them titles?"
Monk I have noticed is a more-meta-than-average show. They constantly have self-references to Monk and did the episode where they are making a movie about Monk with Stanly Tucci playing Monk (The X-Files did it better with Tea Leoni and Gary Shandling, I believe, playing agents Mulder and Skully).
Anyway, I am going to try and gradually shifted the focus of my blog from Arrested Development commentary to meta-entertainment.

Public Relations

Watched "Public Relations" from A.D. season 1. Noticed it has a meta-scene, where the public relations woman describes each character.

As much as I dislike YouTube, their inclusion in the debates wasn't a bad idea. But why YouTube? Could people just submit videos directly so we don't have to be forced into watching grainy, flash video? Anyway, the format offered some hard hitting questions you rarely see in debates but also some obnoxious cutsy garbage that was completely unnecessary. It did add some interesting drama. For instance, they showed a video of a North Carolina preacher arguing why Edward's faith was an obstacle for him supporting gay marriage. Edwards gave his response then Cooper says the guy is in the audience and wants to hear his reaction! It was very Jerry Springer-esque. In conclusion, I like all the candidates even crazy Gravel. Especially crazy Gravel.

Nightmare #2 and Sicko

I had my second MCAT nightmare last night. This time I decide not to take it again but it is too late and I can't cancel it. So I have to take it even though I am tired and really don't want to take it again. At least this series of nightmares might replace my recurring nightmare of having to return to high school to take one more class so I can get my diploma.
Anywho, saw Sicko. Great, great movie, though Michael Moore needs to cut showing real-life people enjoying life under universal health care. He did this with Bowling for Columbine, and it isnt a very good argument. Not that he is wrong but I totally seeing O'Reilly and his Clone Army saying how Moore handpicked his interviews. He should at least show statistics as he interviews people, but I guess that isn't as dramatic.

PTSD MCAT

So I had a nightmare about the MCATs last night. I went to take the exam for a 3rd time (you cannot take it more than 3 times without special permission) and I decide halfway through that I don't want to bother taking it. But I forget to select that I dont want the test to be scored. I am pretty sure preparing for this exam since last September has left me with a slight PTSD.
Also, Chuck and Larry or whatever the latest idiot project from Adam Sandler is getting annoying. I did realize from the ads that whenever a film or TV show wants a comedic wedding it is automatically Jewish. The yarmulkes I guess make the situation humorous. Sandler need to realize his era of comedy is out. This isn't the 90s. Ferrell kicked you out 5 years ago and Apatow replaced him this summer. Maybe give drama a try again.

Harry Potter and the $200 million budget

New Harry Potter movie, not bad. Not as good as the last one (let alone Cuaron's pwning of the franchise). I have decided the movies are better than the books. The movies cut out all the filler (i.e. Quidditch) and make Harry's story more epic. This is the same way I felt about Lord of the Rings.
Anyway, noticed a few things changed in the latest film:

• You see a lot more of the dementors. I preferred them hidden in their cloaks, still are one of the coolest things in the series.
• In the last one, when Sirius communicated through the fireplace his face showed up in the embers not the flame. Were they running over budget in this one?
• Thankfully, Snape got more than one scene in this movie. It would be interesting to see how the characters fare in each film. Ron and Hermionne got totally shafted as did Maggie Smith.

And finally, Two and a Half Men, WTF Emmys? Your lucky you let A.D. win once or else your whole enterprise would be a complete joke.

Jesus Phone

So I drove by a church with a very Simpsons-esque sign, "When God calls on your iPhone." What does this mean? Is this a sly reference to the iPhone as the Jesus Phone? Is it a commentary on consumerism? Are they giving free iPhones to new recruits? Where do I sign up?
Also, I was listening to 99x and one of the hosts was on a preachy rant about how disgusting eating competitions are when 1/3rd of the world is malnurished. How much energy do you think it takes to cool a honkey rink? Or how many millions are poured into guys who tackle the guy directly in front of them, again and again and again and again. In conclusion, all sports are a waste when we should be thinking about the less fortunate...

Saw Ratatouille yesterday, another excellent Pixarian film (good to see them back in form after the mediocre Cars. Why did you have to ruin their perfect streak John Lassetter, why!?!). I watched 4 episodes of That's My Bush last night, the short-lived Trey Park/Matt Stone sitcom that came out shortly after the election in 2000. It got me to thinking, what if Gore had won in 2000? We would have had 7 glorious seasons of Everybody Loves Al. And our country wouldn't be in shambles.
