Mr. Freeze - death of his wife
The Riddler - fired from his job
Two Face - psychotic disorder
Clayface - narcissism
Killer Croc - outcast by society
Green Goblin (Henry) - capatalism
Green Goblin (Harry) - father issues/jealously
Lex Luthor - capatilism
Braniac - born evil
Venom - jealously/ambition
Carnage - born evil
Magneto - war/prejudice
Apacolypse - born evil
Dr. Octopus - death of his wife/ambition
Vulture - youth obsession
Hydro-Man - desire

Capatilism seems to be a primary source of super-villianary. The scariest villains are born evil. Many super villians also refer to philosophy (Neitzsche) or science (Darwin) to justify their actions. The Riddler wins for most pety reason for super villianry (not counting the Trio from Buffy, who are just bored (and wanted lasers and "chicks"))
